“Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”

“Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
— Psalm 90:2 (NIV)

DEVOTIONAL

The mountains feel permanent. Solid. Unshakable. You look at something like this, and it’s easy to think it has always been here and always will be. But this verse shifts that perspective in a quiet, powerful way. Before these mountains ever rose from the earth, God already was.

What feels massive to us is still something created, something temporary in the bigger picture. The same God who formed these ridges and carved these slopes has been present long before them and will remain long after. He is not part of creation. He stands outside of it, above it, and over it.

There is something grounding about that. Life can feel uncertain, plans shift, and things we thought were stable sometimes are not. Yet God does not change. He is not limited by time or circumstance. The same steady authority behind creation is still at work today.

Standing in front of something this big reminds you of something even greater. Not the mountain itself, but the One who made it. And that means your life is anchored to something far more permanent than anything you can see.

REFLECTION

What in your life feels “permanent” right now that may actually be temporary?

How does remembering that God existed before creation change your perspective on your current situation?

Where are you placing your sense of stability, in things that can shift, or in God who does not?

What would it look like to trust God as your foundation this week?

PRAYER

Lord, thank You for reminding me that You were here long before anything I can see. When life feels uncertain or unstable, help me to remember that You do not change. You are steady, constant, and always present. Shift my focus away from things that feel permanent but are not, and anchor my trust in You alone. Give me peace in knowing that my life is held by the same God who created the mountains. Help me walk with confidence this week, grounded in who You are, not in what surrounds me. Amen.

Before the mountains stood, God already was.
He is your only true constant.
